Interesting comix from around the interwebs:

Preview of "The G20, Ian Tomlinson and bad apples" by Edd Baldry can be found here: [pdf]

  • Japanofail was recommended to me but I have to admit that I just don't get it.

  • I have just finished reading "The curious incident of the dog in the night-time" by Mark Haddon. In chapter 139 The case of the Cottingley Fairies is mentioned (I don't know yet what to think about the book. My first impression was that it was simply boring).  Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, actually believed that the fairies on the pictures made by 16-year-old Elsie Wright and her 10-year-old cousin Frances Griffiths were real. He sent letters to Elsie and her father requesting the pictures for his incoming article in the Xmas edition of The Strand magazine. These letters together with their transcripts can be found on JREF or on Letters of Note.

"Observation of clients at a state mental health hospital by direct care staff indicated that they appeared to act in more inappropriate ways when "hard rock" or "rap" music was played in an open courtyard than when "easy listening" or "country" music was played."

I have not blogged much lately, but this hopefully will change in the coming weeks. First additions to the blog are LinkLogic posts with links to interesting web pages, articles, or images from around the Interwebs.

I came across the phrase "molecular cyborgs" while reading the article of Prof. Richard Jones (University of Sheffield) "Computing with molecules" (Nature Nanotechnology, 2009, 4, 207).

According to Prof. Jones "molecular cyborgs" are created "as a result of synthetic molecular logic merging directly with the cell's own control systems". This could be accomplished, for example, by using an RNA "construct" to control the in-vivo expression of a particular gene in response to molecular logic as described by Win and Smolke in their Science article "Higher-order cellular information processing with synthetic RNA devices" (Science, 2008, 322, 456; the "molecular cyborgs" phrase does not appear in this article). The phrase appeared several times before, however carrying a different meaning. For example Thomas Pfohl in his review article on microfluidics mentioned "molecular cyborgs in the following context:

"An integration of microfluidics with molecular nanomachines (...), which have been optimized by nature is conceivable. It may be possible to machine "molecular cyborgs" by self-assembly of biomaterials and inorganic microsystems: highly intergated hybrid systems, which may be incoporated inot blood vessels to fulfill highly specific function".
